After settlement in 1788, the aboriginal people from the Parramatta area were described by Europeans as the Burramedigal, derived from three words - burra(eel), matta(creek) and gal (belong to). The name "Parramatta" means "Place where the eel lies"

St Patrick's Cathedral in Parramatta is one of the most historic sites in our country. The first seeds of the Catholic faith in Australia were sown here. Mass was first allowed to be said in Parramatta on Sunday May 22,1803. It was celebrated by a convict priest, in the goal which stood in Price Alfred Park

The Parramatta Catenians were setup much later, in March 2000.
